Students from this school will be making the news for real on 21 March 2013 as they take part in BBC News School Report. We aim to publish the news by 1600 GMT on the News Day, so please save this page as a favourite and return to it later.  In the meantime, take a look at what our students produced last year

CleanUp UK

On the 15th February 2012 18 enthusiastic volunteers in London did a big clean up for the Olympics. It took the volunteers 2 hours to fill and amazing 26 sacks! They collected things like cigarette butts, beer cans and empty crisp packets. The event was supported by the charity CleanupUK, which was formed by people wanting to make London a cleaner place. Dave Cox a caretaker at St Catherine’s said ‘This is a very good idea to make London a cleaner place.’ At St Catherine’s we are already doing this as we go through about four big bags of rubbish a day.

St Catherine’s Football Triumph

St Catherine’s football team is a team of seven talented girls. Their names are Neve, Lauren, Rosie, Natalie, Amelia, Jasmine and Maisie. The girls say that they really enjoy football ‘because it’s really fun and it is good exercise’. The girls are inspired by many teachers, family members and professional footballers. The St Catherine’s team have successfully won all their matches so far, and are really looking forward to going into their final match on Tuesday 20th March; this will take place at Erith School. If the girls win the final match the will have won the school league! At St Catherine’s we are very enthusiastic about the Olympics and sport. We have recently been awarded ‘Get Set School of the month’ and have had many sporting events since. In a few weeks St Catherine’s will be taking part in the sport relief mile on our own school feild!

The Olympic Stadium

The Olympics is a very big event in London and many are very excited for it. In preparation for the Olympics there was an Olympic stadium made. This will be a very big landmark in London like Big Ben. We interviewed a P.E teacher at St Catherine’s and she told us ‘That she believes that the Olympic stadium is amazing but she is worried that we may be spending too much money on it and we are going way over budget. She also believes that the stadium will stay up for a very long time but after the games it should be used for other things like football matches and other sporting events.’ Many others think that we are going way over budget with the Olympic stadium because it is only for the Olympics and they think it would be made better and better value for money if we put restaurants in the stadium. The Olympics are taking place on the 27th July 2012 and we are all looking forward to seeing the stadium in action!

From Victim to Athlete

7/7 victim Martine Wright aged 39 lost both her legs in the horrific accident on 7th July 2005 now almost 7 years on she is competing in the London 2012 Paralympics Games as a part of their volleyball team.
At St Catherine’s School we have a Olympic Committee that specialise in enforcing in the schools Olympic Values they are, respect, excellence , friendship , courage , inspiration and equality . We spoke members of the Olympic committee to find out what they do and their thoughts on Martine Wright.
Year 11 student Hollie said “she shows excellence ... she shows respect as well [and that] people still respect you is your are disabled in any way”
Year 9 student Kelly said “[this woman’s story shows] anything is achievable if you put your mind to it…she’s lost two of her limbs and is still able to play volleyball and that’s not an easy sport it’s a sport that you need your [legs] for”. We then spoke to Miss Moore P.E teacher and head of the Olympic Committee at St Catherine’s, She Said “there is an Olympic value of courage and I think if someone has lost their limbs in something as tragic as the 7/7 bombings is a horrible thing to go through but she’s used her courage and come though, she had determination which is another value to perform to the best of her ability and compete in the biggest competition in the world”

London 2012: 7/7 Aldgate bomb survivor Martine Wright's Paralympics place

Martine Wright's sitting volleyball team has qualified for the games, meaning the British team will, for the first time, compete in all sports. Ms Wright, from Tring, Hertfordshire, was one of the last people to be pulled from the wreckage of the Tube train at Aldgate, in 2005. She said becoming an elite sportswoman in the aftermath was hard to believe.  We interviewed the Olympic Committee from St Catherine’s School for Girls.
Our first interviewee was Hollie.  Hollie mentioned that Martine Wright’s confidence after the bombing would be useful for St Catherine’s, teaching the pupils that no matter what ability they have, they can do what they are scared to do.

Our second interviewee was Kelly. She mentioned that the example of Martine Wright would greatly influence St Catherine’s to take part in more sports.
