Areas Studied at Key Stage 3
All students follow a course in either French or Spanish in Years 7, 8 and 9, after which the vast majority continue with one of these languages at GCSE level in Years 10 and 11.
Our KS3 schemes of work provide for a secure foundation in the GCSE topics and grammar, and are delivered according to AfL principles and through a range of activities that respond to different learning styles.
Students are regularly assessed in the four skills as well as in the acquisition of vocabulary and key grammar.
Areas Studied at Key Stage 4
As in Years 7 - 9, students are taught in three 50 minute lessons per week. In the GCSE years they are also able to attend after-school booster clubs.
The department follows the AQA GCSE course. We are committed to providing students with a sound understanding of the grammatical structures that will allow them to communicate confidently and accurately, both in the GCSE examinations and in real-life situations with native speakers.

Extra-Curricular Activities or Visits
We run four very popular foreign trips. In Year 7 students may take part in a one-day visit to the Christmas market in Amiens in northern France. In Year 8 we visit our French partner school in Ambleteuse as part of a three day G&T trip.
In Year 10, pupils who have continued with Spanish are eligible to participate in a five day trip to Barcelona, while those who have taken French may spend a similar amount of time in Paris.
Students of Spanish in Years 8 and 9 have been working with our Spanish partner school in San Sebastián on an email and video exchange programme
The department regularly arranges for students in Years 8-10 to attend theatre productions in French and Spanish.
We are a forward-thinking subject area and keenly encourage development in our curriculum and extra-curricular programme.
