Year 9 are taking their mock „end of year exams just before half term. We would like to wish them good luck with this and their ongoing revision, as their end of year exams approach – March 24th – 26th. Remember to use the MyMaths website, your revision guides, workbooks and the BBC Bitesize website. Students will have past papers to complete and they should ensure that they put maximum effort into this aspect of revision, which will support and enhance their performance on the lead up to the end of year assessments. Remember this result will affect your maths set in KS4 and therefore your level of entry at GCSE. Maths GCSE work will start after Easter. Good Luck.

Well done to the Year 11 students for their Maths Mock, their entry into the exam hall and the general behaviour has been excellent especially in view of the very cold mornings that we have at present. It is therefore a great pity that so many students let us down this morning-Wednesday, when they had their Calculator paper.
There were far too many students ill prepared for the exam in terms of equipment – calculators, protractors and pairs of compasses had to be given out – so many in fact that extra supplies had to found at short notice. All students were advised both in lessons and through Contact that they all had to provide their own equipment – in the summer this will also be the case and for it to be in a clear pencil case.
Equipment needed in maths exams: 2 black pens, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, metric ruler, protractor, pair of compasses, SCIENTIFIC calculator.
Perhaps Santa could give your daughters an exam pencil case in their Christmas stockings?

At the end of last week Yr10 and Yr11
all received a letter regarding revision
guides for KS4 GCSE exams.
The
books are from Letts and Lonsdale and
are the new publication called GCSE
Success and come as a revision book
and a work book.
They are excellent
publications and will be useful in both
class and for work at home.
The price
is £6.50
We are also offering a CD Rom from
Maths Watch at £3, which has video
clips and revision questions which will
help with past papers and general revision
at home.
Again, a very useful
resource and highly recommended.
The deadline for these resources
is Monday 23rd November, as I
would like the students to have them
as soon as possible for their exams.
Please send the reply slip with the
exact monies and hand directly into
the office.
The Yr11 Mock exams are fast
approaching.
All students will be
expected to have ALL equipment
necessary for EVERY exam: a
black biro, a pencil, an eraser, a pencil
sharpener, a 30cm ruler, a protractor,
a pair of compas ses and a
SCIENTIFIC calculator.
As you will
appreciate it is impossible to give out
equipment to everyone and therefore
no equipment will be handed out in the
exams, as is our usual practice.
MyMaths is our on-line homework
resource and every student has her
own password to access it. I have
been asked a number of times what
parents can do at home to help with
their daughters’ maths – please ask
them to try some of the booster
packs.
Choose a subject that they feel
comfortable with at first, then move
on to something that they feel could
be a challenge.

All Year 7, 8 and 9 parents will now have received a letter about the fantastic Letts and Lonsdale publication of both Course books
and work books for your daughters.
I would urge you to consider purchasing these books, as your daughters will be able to use
them in class and write directly on them with their own notes and use them as a revision tool for both the half termly assessments
and end of year exams.
If they want to do extra work at home or to look again at something that they did in class then this is a
great way to do it.
The outstanding maths exam packs for Year 7 have only partly arrived and your daughters should by now have received them.
Unfortunately the wrong calculator was delivered and we have had to return these.
I will let you know as soon as the correct
ones are in school.
Scientific calculators.
Every year students have difficulties with some calculators not working like their friends or the rest of the
class and it can cause time to be wasted whilst teachers explain how individual ones work. In order to help ease this issue, as well
as the one where your daughter says I don’t have one, I have sent home a letter this week to all parents of Years 8 to11 inclusive,
as we as a maths department are able to make a bulk order to purchase the CASIO fx-85ES scientific calculator which is dual powered.
The cost is £6.50 and the deadline for payment is 14th October 09.
If your daughter has not given you a letter and you wish
to purchase the calculator then please send in a cheque for this amount in an envelope labelled with your daughters name, form
and maths teacher. Exact money only please.
Years 10 and 11 should not feel left out.
Letters will be issued shortly about revision guides and workbooks as well as the chance
to purchase a fantastic CD that has revision clips and worksheets.
All students will have received confirmation of their user names and passwords for MyMaths this week.
This is a fantastic website that as a Department we subscribe to.
It is internet based and as long as your daughter logs in and clicks the ‘checkout’ at the end
her class teacher will be able to monitor her work and revision.
Ask your daughter to show you the games section – some fantastic
games that you can play together.
How big is your brain is particularly addictive!
Finally,
Fronter will play a major part in the Maths Department this year.
Fronter is the schools Managed Learning Environment
and copies of text books are being uploaded into the virtual classrooms and past papers will follow.
It is internet based so when
your daughters ask about using the internet, please remember that it may be to do their maths homework!

In 2008 we held a Maths day for all year 10 students.
A group of students from The University of Greenwich was leading the activity.
The brief was to build a cost effective bridge using:
Plastic straws,
paper clips, and cello tape.
At the end of the activity the bridge which could hold the most weight across a 1m span was given the first prize. If there was a tie the most cost effective bridge (using less materials) would get the first prize.
The girls had to work in groups.
The activity promoted creative thinking, leadership skills, group work, logical thinking and reasoning skills.
It was a great success and the girls participated with enthusiasm.
The students reported that they enjoyed working with our girls and that they were very co-operative.
