Music

All instrumental lessons are now underway for the term. It would be most
appreciated if payment could be made as soon as possible – see Mrs Collison
if you are unsure of prices.
Music clubs have also restarted for the term.
Please note that Orchestra has
changed to Tuesday after school.
We would love new players to increase
our numbers!! All levels of ability are welcome – just bring an instrument!

On Tuesday 31st March there will be a music concert in the Drama Studio. The concert will begin at 7pm and finish at around 9pm. There are many different items to hear, from soloists to duets and group singing and playing. It is a chance for some of our pupils who take private lessons to show off their ability and for some extra-curricular clubs like choir and the group singing at the O2 dome to give a flavour of what is to come. Tickets are available at £2 for adults and £1 for children over 5 and under 16.
The Music Department is located in the Arts Block, surrounded by other creative subjects such as Drama, English and Art, with two large classrooms. We have a great deal of space to teach in, as well as excellent resources. An Interactive Whiteboard is in each classroom, as well as several computers. Each classroom has a full electronic keyboard suite, as well as a piano and percussion.
As a foundation subject, all pupils will receive a 50 minute lesson, once per week, in years 7, 8 and 9. The department not only run a GCSE in Music for years 10 and 11, but work in partnership with Drama and Dance to deliver a Performing Arts BTec. This qualification can be upgraded and built upon through several stages of education, providing another way for pupils to access the creative arts.
We run a variety of music clubs within the department, including three choirs. One provides exclusively for year 7, with another for years 8 and 9. The upper school choir gives pupils in years 10 and 11 who have no music lessons, a chance to engage with the art. We also run an orchestra for all year groups and a percussion group, concentrating on rhythmic skills and improvisation. With so many fresh ideas from staff and pupils, new clubs are always created.
The department is moving forward with music technology by getting a number of PCs in the music rooms so that the pupils will be able to use them for composing and be able to hear a live performance of their creative ideas.
We have over a hundred pupils taking part in private lessons in the school. Instruments being taught are keyboard, piano, violin, flute, saxophone, clarinet, drums and guitar.
