Science Department and Crest Award
The Science department will be running a Crest Award project starting from 24th February every Wednesday with 7C students. CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) is the national award scheme for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), run by the British Science Association and established over 23 years ago.
Through CREST, young people aged 11-19 explore the real nature of STEM by doing their own creative project work.
The project that has been decided for the students to complete is an ‘Investigate how many washes it takes to get your hands clean?’.

YR 11 GCSE Science Modular exams
All students in Yr 11 should have received a copy of their GCSE modular exam results which they took in June 2009.
Currently the Science department is reviewing which students should be given the opportunities to retake these exams based on teacher recommendation.
However if your daughter wishes to retake any of the modules which she took last year, including those in Jan 2009, and hasn’t been recommended by her Science teacher then she must collect a form from Mrs Hinch (exams Officer) and return it to her with a payment of £4.30 per module. The closing date for this is Friday 16th October
Please note any forms/payment submitted after this date will NOT be processed.

Yr 7 and Yr 8 students can access the school website to download the Science textbooks which they are currently using in their Science lessons by using the following link:

http://www.stccg.co.uk/download/es_activebook_y7/index.html
http://www.stccg.co.uk/download/es_activebook_y8/index.html
We will be shortly issuing all students in Yr 7 & Yr 8 a CD which complements the book.
The CD can be installed in to your home computer and can be used for homework tasks and research projects.
The CD must be returned once it has been installed and returned to your Science teacher.
These will be issued next week.

We are a committed and experienced team of Science specialists.
In the subject area we work hard to engage all the students in real-life and theoretical Science at school and to develop a Scientific perspective in our students to carry into their lives beyond the school gates.
We have participated in the Bexley Science & Technology Challenge. In 2008 we were runners-up.
There are currently 7 principal members of our subject area:

We are lucky to have some very good facilities:
- A discrete Science block
- Eight purpose-built laboratories
- Every Scientist has her/his own lab
- Three purpose-built prep rooms
- Every lab is equipped with IWBs
- Mobile lap tops exclusive to the Science department
We are supported by a very able and experienced team of three Science Technicians led by our Senior Science Technician.
Science at KS3 & 4
Every student has 4 lessons of Science a week at KS3. In year 7, 8 & 9 all students have followed Oxford Science which is being phased out & replaced by Exploring Science, which focuses on How Science Works, part of the revised KS3 strategy.
The students regularly watch demonstrations and carry out their own experiments.
In year 10 and 11 almost every student has 5 lessons including at least one double for practical work.
The specification we follow is OCR C21st Science. We prepare the majority of students for Additional/Double Science, although a 40% are initially prepared for and offered Triple Award. A small cohort take the Core/Single Science.
We are a department striving for excellence and have made significant improvement in our standards and achievement in recent years.
