Exam season has got underway very smoothly with students turning up promptly, well equipped and well prepared. Lets hope this trend continues all the way through to the last exam on Tuesday 29th June. A reminder: all girls taking a morning exam (9am) may claim her free breakfast (croissant or pain au chocolat, as well as a drink) from the cafeteria from 8.15am onwards. A bottle of water is provided for each student at the beginning of each exam.

I am still accepting applications for the Summer Half Term Revision Sessions, but this will need to end shortly. Please encourage your daughter to submit her application form as soon as possible, so we can complete the necessary administration.

A very large majority of Year 11 students have been invited to the Year 11 Leavers Prom on 2nd July. We are particularly delighted that so many students met the criteria, published in the Autumn. There is a small group however, who are under a „warning to ensure we can have complete confidence that this event will run smoothly.

Year 11 Leavers Mass ~ all our Year 11 parents and carers are being invited to Our Year 11 Leaver Mass on Monday 28th June. A letter of invitation has been sent, via your daughter on Thursday 20th May. We very much look forward to seeing you.

Below is the schedule with all the arrangements for the 2010 exams. Apart from the exams themselves, there is a „warm up lesson before each one to prime the girls, give last minute tips and build up confidence. This is organised as close to the exam as possible.

The girls attend in full school uniform until the end of this half term, Friday 28th May. Any exams this half term, fit into the school day: the girls go to ordinary timetabled lessons as normal, either side of the „warm up lesson and examination.
All the normal rules about punctuality, uniform, make up, jewellery, phones or electronic equipment continue to apply right through the examination period.

After half term, the girls attend for their „warm up lessons, the exams and also any other classes their teachers require them to attend, Please note: extra Science classes have been arranged to support the girls with both modular test and terminal papers.

Application forms should be in by Monday, at the very latest, for joining Summer Half term revision classes.
The Year 11 prom invitations will be issued shortly. We are delighted that almost every student will be invited, However, sadly, there are a small group whose attendance, punctuality and attitude means their invitation may be withdrawn.

Yr 11 Exam Warm Up Schedule 2010 for students & parents

line

Attached is a reminder of the full range of the Year 11 after school revision classes that are available. Please encourage your daughter to attend a session each afternoon. My strongest advice, having looked at the most recent data, is that students need to attend Maths after school revision classes; please make this a priority when you are advising your daughter. Every Maths teacher has at least one, often two sessions per week and this is where individual support and advice can be given.
Also attached, is a copy of the Summer Revision Classes application form. All students are strongly urged to attend. You need to sign the form for each day she is attending. This forms needs to be returned to reception as soon as possible, please note during the half term revision session days, no one will be admitted after 9.15am. This is to ensure the safety and security of everyone on site.
As we approach the beginning of the written exam season, preparation is supported by a „warm up lesson preceding each exam. This will be shared in detail with each student. It is particularly important that you note that after half term there will be a revision session either in the morning or afternoon prior to the actual exam. During the exam season, the girls will be offered breakfast in school between 8.10am-8.30am and provided with a bottle of water for each examination.

Year 11 After-School Sessions Apr-May 2010 22.4.10 Summer Half Term Revision Sessions 2010

line

English/Maths Master Classes ~ These were held, in school, on Wednesday 28th April and proved to be a very successful event. The informal feedback from the students indicate that all sessions provided invaluable help and assistance.
Summer Half Term Revision Classes ~ A selection form for these will shortly be issued to Year 11 students giving full details of the revision sessions that we will be running over the half term holiday.
Parents/Carers are kindly requested to ensure that they sign the form and return it to school at their earliest convenience, to cover insurance and security purposes. The format will be 3 x 1 hour sessions on each of the designated days with a mid morning break. Refreshments will be provided for the girls.
Please be aware that for security purposes there will be NO admittance into school on these days after 9.15am.

Easter Revision Classes
141 students attended a full range of classes offered in preparation for the following GCSEs. Informal feedback has been very positive and even appreciative. The only serious concern was, despite a year of measures to improve punctuality, a number of student were late to classes.

Bootser Sessions
On Wednesday 28th April there will be a half day booster session in English and Maths at A/A* and also for C/D borderline students. On Thursday 29th April and Tuesday11th May there will be two, full day, Science Master Classes focussing on the final Modular Tests and the Context and Ideas written exams.

Lunchtime and After School
A full programme of revision opportunities is available to all Year 11 students; it is attached to this edition. Parents/Carers are asked to actively encourage their daughters to attend.
Tuesday 11th May: Whole Year Revision Focus
While a quarter of the Year group attend Science Master Class, the rest of the Year group will follow an intensive programme of English, Maths, Science and IT revision and preparation.

Summer Half Term Revision Classes
Following the success of the Easter event, there will be classes on Wednesday 2nd, Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th June which are in the week preceding the major exam papers. The classes will be slightly shorter, lasting one hour, starting at 9.00am until 12.15pm, including one break where refreshments will be provided. It is essential however, that students arrive on time as the gate will close at 9.15am after which admission, we regret, will not be possible. This is because the school runs on a skeleton staff in the holidays and the constant remote opening of the gate compromises the safety and security of the site.

Thank you to all the Parents/Carers who accompanied their daughters to the Year 11 Academic Review Meeting. I hope you found the meeting useful.
The two week Easter break is a critical time for the girls. The first week will require them to work independently. I do think that establishing small learning groups can also help and the girls help each other. In the second week there will be considerable input from the staff and I am extremely impressed by the offer we have been able to organise for them over the 3 days of revision school.
My thanks to everyone who is coming in, it is much appreciated.

Study Skills Techniques
Year 11 benefited from an intensive half day session on study skills last Friday. Four presenters delivered a range of suggestions for revision techniques to suit all learning styles. This was done in a lively and engaging manner. This should help Year 11 with their exam preparations as they go up „another gear‟ towards the exams.

Your comments :
“I learned loads and it was fun and interesting, I really think this session will help when it comes to revision.”
“I liked the memory revision. I remember all the words still – magic! Sheleagh was especially good.”

Easter Revision for Year 11
There will be sessions on Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th of April. Teachers will be offering three sessions each day covering the whole curriculum. Year 11 students will be asked to express their preferences for sessions next week. The sessions begin promptly at 9.00. Each session lasts 1½ hours followed by a short break at 10.30 and 12.15. Students do not need to wear uniform but should be appropriately dressed. There will be refreshments at first break. No students will be allowed to leave the school and return during the sessions.

Master classes for Science
We will be running Mater Classes for Science students on the C/D border, on 29th April and 11th May. We are determined our girls aspire to levels of success in science, equivalent to those they reach in other core subjects.

Year 11 Prom Invitations
Students have been reminded this week how they will qualify for an invitation to the Year 11 Prom at the Valley on 2nd of July. They will need to:

Attend school every day on time
Participate in all learning opportunities
Attend Easter revision sessions
Keep to the Schools „Choose to Learn policy
Conduct themselves according to the „School Code

The After-School Revision programme for Year 11 students for the next half term. However students have been reminded of the crucial importance of striving for their C grade or better in English and Maths.

Year 11 2010 Leavers
Plans are well under way for the Year 11 final year celebrations. Mrs. Benson, the Leavers Committee, Mr. Edmunds, Mr. Jones and the Media BTEC classes are working very hard on the Year Book.
This will be finished shortly and cost no more than £5. It is looking really good already, with lots of pictures and other memories which I am sure the girls will really treasure.
The 2010 Prom is booked for Friday July 2nd, at the North Suite at Charlton Athletic Football Ground, and promises to be a really special and glamorous event.
The theme is „Hollywood Glam – 100% efforts to look good required! The ticket price for this will be in the region of £15 – £20. This will include drinks on arrival, a buffet and a DJ.
There will be a photography company there on the night to take pictures that can be bought at the time. In addition to all of this, we will be ordering 2010 St. Catherines Leavers „Hoodies, the design of which the pupils themselves will be able to pick. More information and prices to follow shortly. Of course, all of this is open to everyone – we would like the invitation to The Prom to go to ALL Year 11s, we ideally would like ALL the girls to have a „hoody and a Year Book.
However, as we have pointed out, this all depends on whether or not the Year 11s make good choices. Excellent attendance and punctuality are vital, as are behaving courteously, and making the most of all learning opportunities.
