Business and Enterprise
In line with Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011, students in Year 9 were challenged to come up with a business idea that they feel passionately about. Not only did this idea have to be real and viable as a business, but it had to be original and innovative. This idea would then be submitted to a brand new enterprise scheme called “TeenBiz”.
TeenBiz is the UK's first business start up scheme aimed at teens 13-18, started by Claire Young who is an Entrepreneur and businesswoman.
“TeenBiz aims to provide talented entrepreneurs a step on the ladder and over the next 3 years we aim to help 100 new businesses...”

There was a huge response to the competition within the year group, but only one idea could be picked for submission in the scheme’s very first month. Priscilla Tshimuanga, 9I was our first submission, with her absolutely fantastic idea revolving around custom fashion and a unique network of designers. We wish her good luck and inspiration with her potential business.
Keep a look out over the next year as more students are submitted for this amazing entrepreneurial opportunity!

Year 9 Christmas Reward Trip to Cineworld, Bexleyheath

Due to a problem with the original trip date (9th December), we have decided to reschedule the year 9 reward trip to happen on Monday 12th December. This will not change any trip costing or any other detail, bar the actual date itself.

Students are therefore reminded that they should bring normal books for lessons on the 9th December and be prepared for a normal day of learning at school, but should leave books for lesson 3, 4 and 6 at home on Monday 12th. Students will have late lunch on this day (1.30pm)

Achievements

2011 -2011 has been an amazing year. We have achieved excellent attendance figures and the tracking has been respectable overall.

Phoebe Franklin broke her 2011 javelin record this Sports Day at the Erith stadium.

A large number of then, year 8s were involved in the extremely successful “Wiz” production earlier this year. It was a resounding success that year 8 supported fully!

A huge thanks to our Year 8 students who performed in the music concert and musical events over the year. Your contributions are appreciated and loved by all.

Several Year 8 students also made up the incredible “St. Catherine’s Glee club”. These performers have achieved great things in the mere 4 weeks that they have existed. Not only have they succeeded in the regional heats for the Jack Petchey competition, but were asked to perform at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford. It’s brilliant to see so much creativity in our year group.

To top things off, Year 9 will be celebrating their great achievements with an incredible trip to Eurodisney next year! The Year 9 students will be taking a trip by coach to the park for a 2 day visit.

Study Support Advice

This is a very important year for the Year 9 students, as they embark upon their final year in Key Stage 3 and make decisions about their Key Stage 4 options it is important that we support and encourage them to remain organized and focus.

• Monitor your daughter's bedtime.  As they grow older your daughter's will tell you that they should be allowed to stay up later but they still need a lot of sleep.  Students who are tired find it difficult to concentrate and remain focused.

• Agree a regular time for your daughter to do her Home Learning so that she has a routine.  Ensure that she has a space to do this, whether that is in bedroom or at the kitchen or dining room table.  Talk to your daughter about her work and ask her questions to show that you are interested.

• Put a copy of her Home Learning timetable on the fridge so that you know what she should be expecting.  Check her planner regularly to ensure that Home Learning has been written down.

• If you know there are areas that your daughter needs to make further progress in then find a way to support her with this e.g if she has problems with spelling or subject specific vocabulary, put key words on the fridge or cupboard doors so that she can be reminded about them as she walks through the kitchen to get a drink or a snack.  Test her on them.

• Talk to your daughter about school and her learning!
