Student Voice

Student Voice is an integral part of life at St Catherine’s and because it is so important we have a number of ways in which the students cannot only share their ideas and opinions but also take on responsibility and really live out our mission statement by making a positive contribution to school life.

The Junior Leadership Team

Every year we a group of 6 students in Year 10 are appointed as the Junior Leadership Team (JLT). This team consists of the Head Girl, 3 Deputy Head Girls and 2 Assistant Head Girls. The students must apply for the post and there is always tough competition and then staff are consulted before the short listing takes place, and the Year 10 students vote in order to express their preference, each student must conduct a meeting of the Year 7 or 8 School Council, they must deliver an assembly as a group and finally they must give a presentation to the Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher’s and their Year Leader before being interviewed.

The girls have a wide range of responsibilities, from leading teams of prefects, chairing the various Year Councils and Whole School Council and are called upon to represent the school at various events, including our Open Evenings and Celebration of Achievement Evenings.

The School Council

We have a vibrant school council at St Catherine’s which we have worked hard to renew and develop over the last 3 years,  and we take the process of electing students to the School Council very seriously. This year we will run our elections in October. All students are given the opportunity to put their names forward and then candidates are expected to deliver a speech in their form groups explaining why they elected. This is followed by an election by secret ballot which is organised by the JLT and the Prefect Teams.

The enhanced structures for school council that will run in 2018 will enable us to continue to build on the strengths of the school council.

Aims of the school council

School council aims to support our school mission statement and promote a culture of togetherness, strength, love and joy through our faith. We recognise the importance of every member of our community work towards success through unity.

The school mission statement:

  • Be a vibrant, inclusive, Catholic community where there is mutual, love, service and respect.
  • Offer opportunities to everyone on their unique journey to nurture their strength and potential.
  • Encourage everyone to positively serve our society and the world by living our Gospel values.
  • Celebrate and empower women of the future.

‚ÄčThe school council structure

Our school council is made up of two representatives, form councillors, from each form. Form councillors represent the views of their form and communicate their ideas and proposals at committee meetings. At committee meeting we discuss proposals to take forward to action planning meetings and make decisions about how we will work together to make our proposals a reality. When an action plan is in place we communicate with SLT and they help us to bring our ideas to completion.

Other Student Voice and Leadership Opportunities

There are numerous other ways for students to become involved in student voice and student leadership including becoming:
